I'm 17 and I am getting my permit next week. I have looked nearby me and found several cars that fit within my price range but I am unsure which one I should get. They are all $1000 and under. Some of them have cosmetic issues but they don't have anything mechanically wrong listed about them. I don't need anything fancy, just something to learn in and get used to driving with. The choices are: 2000 Hyundai Elantra with 168k miles, 2001 Mercury Grand Marquis with 170k miles, 2004 Dodge Neon with 198k miles, 1999 Jeep Grand Cherokee with 200k miles, 2001 Nissan Maxima with 184k miles, 2003 Hyundai Sonata with 180k miles, and a 2002 Ford Explorer with 200k miles. Are any of these good deals or should I keep looking? Any suggestions for a teen first car? Thanks for your help!

  • Why do dealers charge more?

Why do car dealers like to charge more? Most of the time they fail to clean the interior or even detail the vehicle in general and still charge 2-5k more (varies) I've been told that they aren't even guaranteed to be problem free and to just skip a dealer and buy "private party"

  • Should a 17 year old have a brand new car?

    1. Leasing can work if you have a business that pays tax and is VAT registered. In general though if not then you will throw money down the drain.
    2. There is no particular reason why a 17 year old should not have a new car just because it is a new car. The likelihood of at least a minor bump is very high in the first year on the road though - even for the ones who thought that they were one of the best drivers in the whole world.
    3. The insurance on the Merc for a 17 year old student with a part time business, as that is what you are it seems, will be somewhere between £massi.ve and £impossib.le. If anyone will even insure it to include business travelling for a self employed person even at 18 the whole deal is going to represent very poor value for money.
    4. Anyone who is interested in owning a good standard of car, unless they already own say a Ferrari or Bugatti or whatever they consider best, will aspire to the next one up or higher. The A class will just look like you could not afford a C class when you pull up next to one somewhere.
    5. All new cars are only new for but an instant. The first time they need a wash they become a nearly new car. A slightly used car is often a better choice in terms of depreciation and it is the same as a new car that you have owned for a short time.

Sounds like that for a 17 year old you are making a good start in life. Remember though that trying to run before you can walk often results in a bloody scraped nose. This does not just apply to teenagers. I have known many people over the years who have got into a business, done well for a start, and gone for the flash car. The flash car is one of the first things to go when the business is over its honeymoon period as they need the cash to keep going - after that the flash house, possibly the wife/girlfriend and the business itself become a distant memory. Might not be the case for you but then again none of those people I know thought that it was the case for them neither.

Good luck anyway and congratulations for asking for advice.

My family bought a used car about 2 weeks ago (please note that we are not car experts and do not know what to look at or know if something is wrong). It had failed DEQ the first time and we took it back to the dealers who said they would fix the problem and run it through DEQ for us again. It had failed a second time. We asked for the CEL to be fixed because it would not turn on when doing the self test. However, they ignored our request and fixed the fuel cap light (replaced the gasket). Something seemed wrong, so we went to Ford (they have been very realizable for us) to have it checked. We found out that they had messed with the car greatly and it won't pass DEQ and other things without extreme payments. It is not worth keeping the car and we want a refund. How do we get out of the contract (as is/with an arbitrator)? Firstly, it is illegal to sell a car that won't pass DEQ. Secondly, they lied and manipulated us to get our money and the car out of their hands. And lastly, we don't have the money nor trust with the damage done to the vehicle. If any advice or recommendations, it would be appreciated. Thank you.

Every time you are ready to spend any money think if you could save that money instead and make do without. Cut your cell usage, cut you cable programming, cut your entertainment budget and dining out budget - it is called sacrificing - works well and becomes a habit after awhile.
